Air Force Maj. Amy Horan

For DISA's Women's History Month celebration, Joint Forces Headquarters – Department of Defense Information Network Strategy and Policy Planner Maj. Amy Horan shares her story and thoughts on this year’s theme, “Providing healing, promoting hope,” highlighting the many ways woman support each other.

Q: What is your job title at DISA JFHQ-DODIN?

A: “I serve as a strategy and policy planner.”

Q: What does your job at DISA JFHQ-DODIN involve?

A: “In this position, I serve as a technical authority on JFHQ-DODIN policy and doctrine, providing Defensive Cyber Operations guidance to the command. I synchronizes JFHQ-DODIN missions into applicable policies and doctrine, and I manage and work to resolve any command strategy and policy issues that arise. This usually calls for external collaboration with U.S. Cyber Command, Office of the DOD Chief Information Officer the Principal Cyber Advisers Office, or Joint Staff and others to identify, coordinate and implement DCO strategies, policies and doctrine.”

Q: How long have you worked with DISA JFHQ-DODIN?

A: “I have been in the Strategy and Policy branch for approximately three years, and with JFHQ-DODIN for a little longer than that.”

Q: What career path did you take to your current position?

A: “I actually didn’t intentionally have a career path leading to DCO strategy and policy. As an Air Force Cyber Operations Officer under the 17D career field, our training allows us to be postured in a vast array of cyber operations efforts.

Q: What is your education background (i.e. What did you study)?

A: “My bachelor’s degree is in Business Information Systems and my master’s degree is in Computer Resources and Information Management.”

Q: This year’s theme for Women’s History Month is “Providing healing, promoting hope.” What does this theme mean to you?

A: “For me, this theme is a humble reminder of the incredible, relentless women who fought and sacrificed so much. As a result, [they] shattered barriers, so I could have the opportunities I have today as a woman, a mother, a proud member of the United States Air Force and an entrepreneur. My “healing” and “hope” was first predicated on their pain, and I am grateful for that. I am grateful for the opportunities opened up for my daughters as a result. I also think about my own personal challenges as a woman and how important it is to share those challenges and my lessons learned with the women coming behind me, to help promote their hopes and dreams.”
