DOD SkillBridge Program

Are you interested in using your military training to advance your career or looking for your next career step after your military service? Are you within 180 days of transition? Discover opportunities to participate in SkillBridge with DISA.

The DOD SkillBridge Program is an opportunity for active duty service members to gain valuable civilian work experience with DISA during their last 180 days of service. SkillBridge connects service members with private and public sector organizations that offer internship opportunities for transitioning service members to build their resumes, explore employment interests, develop job skills and gain valuable federal government work experience that will help them prepare for their adjustment to the workplace. DISA offers a wide array of SkillBridge opportunities in sync with available career fields.

Effective May 1, 2024, DISA instituted a memorandum of understanding and became an approved SkillBridge Industry Partner. DISA welcomes SkillBridge participants for separating service members. There are various internship opportunities throughout the department in a variety of fields.

  • Must be a United States citizen.
  • Must be Active Duty Military (including the National Guard and Reserves) on medical hold status.
  • Must be able to meet security clearance requirements.

Veterans' Recruitment Appointment

The Veterans’ Recruitment Appointment (VRA) hires eligible veterans under excepted appointments to positions that are otherwise competitive service. After completing two years of satisfactory service, the veteran may be converted noncompetitively to a career or career-conditional appointment. Eligible veterans can be appointed up to a GS-11 without competition. The candidate must meet the basic qualification requirements for the position. Use of the authority is entirely discretionary and no one is entitled to a VRA appointment. 

VRA eligibility applies to the following categories:

  • Veterans who served on active duty in the armed forces during a war declared by Congress, or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized; or
  • Disabled veterans;or
  • Veterans who, while serving on active duty in the armed forces, participated in a military operation for which the Armed Forces Service Medal (AFSM) was awarded, to include the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; and/or
  • Veterans recently separated (within 3 years of discharge), and
  • Separated under honorable conditions (this means an honorable or general discharge).

Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998

The Veterans Employment Opportunities Act (VEOA) of 1998, as amended by Section 511 of the Veterans Millennium Health Care Act (Pub. Law 106-117) of November 30, 1999, permits preference eligibles and certain eligible Veterans' the ability to compete for jobs that otherwise only would have been available to status employees. In VEOA appointments, preference eligibles and veterans are not accorded preference as a factor, but they are allowed to compete for job opportunities that are not offered to other external candidates. A VEOA eligible who is selected will be given a career or career-conditional appointment.

Eligibility:

  • Preference eligibles; and
  • Service personnel separated after three or more years of continuous active service performed under honorable conditions.

30% or More Disabled Veteran Authority

The 30% or More Disabled Veteran authority allows an agency to non-competitively appoint any veteran with a 30% or more service-connected disability to any position for which he or she is qualified, without competition. Initial appointments are time-limited, but must last more than 60 days; however, the candidate may be noncompetitively converted to permanent status at any time during the time-limited appointment. There is no grade level restriction.

Eligibility:

  • An applicant must be retired from active military service with a service-connected disability rating of 30% or more; OR
  • Have a rating by the Department of Veterans Affairs showing a compensable service-connected disability of 30% or more.
